- The 17th Summit of the Heads of the Member States of the Sanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) concluded in Astana, Kazakhstan on 8-9 June, 2017.
- This annual summit was hosted and chaired by President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev.
- This is the third occasion when Kazakhstan presided over the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit.
- Prior to this Kazakhstan had presided over the SCO Summit in 2005 and 2011.
- President of China, Xi Jinping, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, and representatives of other member countries participated in the summit.
- India and Pakistan were granted the status of the member countries of the organization under a critical phase of expansion of SCO.
- In the 16th Summit held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in 2016, the two countries had signed a memorandum of obligation to join the organization.
- After India and Pakistan becoming a member, the number of SCO members increased to 8.
- Other members of the organization include China, Kazakhstan Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
- Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran and Mongolia are presently observer countries.
SCO was formed on June 15, 2001. - It is mainly related to military cooperation between member countries.
It includes sharing the intelligence information and undertaking anti-terrorism operations in Central Asia. - It has its headquarters in Beijing, China.
